LEXINGTON, Massachusetts., May 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — CAMX Power LLC (CAMX) announces that it has consented to Johnson Matthey Plc (JM) transferring its GEMX® and CAM-7® cathode license to EV Metals Group Plc (EVM). JM had previously obtained the license from CAMX, operating in its cathodic business. JM incorporated the license into the sale of its cathode business to EVM.
“When JM announced its exit from this sector in November 2021, CAMX was informed that the decision was based on JM’s strategic and financial considerations and that the markets had indeed reacted positively to the eLNO® cathode offer. Today’s JM press release confirms this, bolstered by JM maintaining a stake in EV Metals https://www.evmetalsgroup.comand also linking eLNO to the GEMX and CAM-7 platforms,” said Dr. Kenan SahinFounder/President of CAMX.
Johnson Matthey announces the sale of Battery Materials – matthey.com which states in part:
“The sale also includes Johnson Matthey’s eLNO® technology, underpinned by GEMX® and CAM-7® cathode platforms licensed from CAMX. EV Metals Group will continue the development of eLNO, building on the success of the customer test program which Johnson Matthey had undertaken. »
He continued, “Given that the cathode is nearly 50% of the cost of the lithium-ion cell and half of that cost is for metals and EV Metals already has operations and access to major battery, including lithium, it is uniquely positioned to be a competitive major supplier of best-in-class cathode material that eLNO is in European markets where demand is extraordinarily high, with major OEMs now having fully embraced electric vehicles . »
CAMX has extended its GEMX cathode platform, based on its globally patented grain boundary engineering inventions, to popular high nickel chemistries, improving performance while reducing cobalt. CAMX teams have created specific cathode products complete with precursor formulations that have been tagged and include gNMC™, gNMCA™, gNCA™. With the GEMX license, EV Metals now gets immediate access to all of these product families based on the GEMX platform.
“EV Metal’s pCAM (precursor to cathode active material) business, which moves nickel and lithium downstream, solves precursor availability as a choke point in the supply chain. As a single source from metals to pCAM to CAM and with its significant financial resources, EV Metals is well positioned to quickly complete and expand the cathode plants it acquired from JM, and quickly become a major competitively priced cathode producer.” said Sahin.
Samsung SDI and more recently LG Energy Solution are other licensees of the GEMX platform and have previously incorporated GEMX-derived cathodes into some of the batteries they manufacture. These two companies together account for 30% of LIB’s global sales.
Sahin concluded, “It is expected that EV Metals and CAMX will collaborate closely, which CAMX aims to do with all of its licensees as part of its development and technology transfer model. EV Metals, making the transition from JM to EV Metals much easier and working with CAMX more efficient We have worked with the JM team for many years and have no doubt that with their addition to the EV Metals team, the EV Metals cathode business will quickly become a major global supplier.”
CAMX maintains comparable development and scaling facilities across Massachusetts including a cathode pilot plant and cell manufacturing facilities to rapidly evaluate different cathode formulations in real cells with other components such as anodes for optimal fit. All of this will complement the activities and facilities of EV Metals.

About Dr. Kenan E. Sahin
dr. Kenan E. Sahin is Founder/Chairman of CAMX and Founder/Chairman of TIAX LLC, which he established CAMX in 2014. Previously, he founded Kenan Systems, grew it to 1,000 employees in six countries with its key offering Arbor/BP in as a Telecommunications Billing System Platform. In 1999, he sold Kenan Systems to Lucent/Bell Labs and served as VP of Technology at Bell Labs. Lucent renamed Arbor/BP to Kenan/BP which he eventually sold. Kenan/BP (originally based on AI and Big Data) now serves over 1 billion telecom subscribers worldwide, by far the largest of its kind. Dr. Sahin founded and developed the three companies with his own funds.
He is a Lifetime Emeritus Member of the MIT Board of Trustees, a former member of the Argonne National Laboratory Board of Trustees, and serves on other nonprofit boards such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
